SKILLS AUDIT AND NEEDS ANALYSIS FOR THE MARINE TRANSPORT SECTOR IN SOUTH AFRICA

Marine Transport is a critical system that enables economic activity in South Africa through the transportation of goods between national and international destinations. For the national Marine Transport Sector, development is needed to address weaknesses and deficiencies in local capabilities, meet challenging international standards, match the expansion taking place elsewhere on the African continent, and negotiate the uncertainties in industry standards and practices arising from global environmental priorities and regulations.

Following ten years of Operation Phakisa for the Oceans Economy, and with the transition to the Oceans Economy Master Plan in progress, it is vital to build a clear picture of current skills availability and the knowledge and skills needed to drive development in the sector forward.

Therefore, the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) and the appointed research consultancy for the audit, Socikwa Management, kindly invite companies and organisations in the sector to participate in the Skills Audit and Needs Analysis for the Marine Transport Sector in South Africa.

The business activities covered include the management and/or operation of shipping vessels, stevedoring, and the management and operation of onshore services such as harbours, marinas, drydocks, slipways, shipyards; shipping and customs brokerage services, freight forwarding services, and related services.

Functions to be covered include navigation, operations, maintenance, education and training, safety and security, and environmental protection.

Your contribution will be vital to ensuring that the Skills Audit and Needs Analysis can serve as an accurate and reliable guide to the industry-related role players in their efforts to achieve greater performance and growth.
